So we had this fantastic plan on how to maximize our time and money in Athens. We were going to snag a ride to the Acropolis and get our picture taken there and then run off to the National Museum to see all of the really important stuff. Johannes managed to mooch a ride off an older couple we had met on the ship (a retired Navy guy turned lawyer) and they dropped us off in front of the old Olympic Stadium, so we saved a bunch of money that way. We walked down the street to the Acropolis and decided that 12Euros each was a bit more than we wanted to pay to get our picture taken. So we walked around the outside and tried to snap photos. Unfortunately the whole thing is blocked off with construction, cranes or trees and there are no real decent views. My photo to the left is a quickie photoshop job where I got rid of all of the construction cranes that were in the way of my picture (so don't look too closely). We spent more time there than we intended because we were trying to find out if the National Museum was going to be closed due to the general strike that had stifled our museum efforts the day before.
Once we were done here, we went out to the main road to see if we could catch a cab and go to the museum. It was 9:00am and all of the taxis in the city were full. We were able to find out from a rent-a-car guy that we could take the metro that was just a block away to the museum. So we did that, only to find we were really starting the run out of time and then we couldn't seem to get decent directions to the museum from the metro stop and so finally we gave up. Instead we found the $5.00 t-shirts we needed to bring back to the kids and stopped in at McDonalds to use the free toilets. (Sidenote- if ever you need a free & clean toilet always look for the golden arches, except in Athens by the museum. It was the dirtiest McDonalds restroom I have ever encountered, foreign or domestic, maybe I should write McD's a note about that...)
