Karatepe is an ancient Hittite fortress about an hour away from where we live. It is dated to the 9th century B.C. (yep, that means it's about 3000 years old). It was discovered in 1946 by a german archaeologist, and is probably the oldest and one of the coolest things Johannes and I have ever seen to date.The site is believed to be the fortified residence of the King of Adana. The lions marked the formal entry at the gateways. The relief carvings are called orthostats.
