Before you go into a mosque to pray you need to wash your hands and feet and face. It is not only a matter of hygiene, but a symbol of renewal and re-dedication to God. Also, if your mind starts to wander during the prayers, you have to re-do your ablution, so there are smaller fountains usually inside so that you can rewash and return to prayers.
