This was a summer palace built in the late Ottoman period (mid 1860s) under the orders of Sultan Abdul Aziz. Aziz was a handsome Renaissance man, who was fit, well educated, adventurous and a talented artist. He was particularly fascinated by lions and had statues of lions around the house, as well as a painting hung in the entry by his own hand, and a zoo built on the site with lions, Bengal tigers and ostriches. (The zoo is no longer on site).
