

This obelisk dates from 1500B.C. and it stood outside of Luxor until Emperor Constantine had it brought over to Istanbul. The base was made in the 4th century A.D.
This obelisk and the other two columns below are in what used to be the Hippodrome. The Hippodrome was a giant stadium which could hold up to 100,000 people. There were often chariot races there, and it was the site of a bloody massacre which killed about 30,000 brought on by a brawl between two rival chariot teams, which also destroyed most of the city in the Nika Revolt.
