Another guy, Brad Lauterwasser, flew in with me from Incirlik, and we got to talking when we went to the Armory to turn in our weapons. We were both going to be waiting a while, and he had been stationed at Ramstein before and knew the area. I suggested, as I always do, that we should take a trip while we were waiting. He agreed, and the next day he rented a car. We looked on the map and since neither of us had been to Strasbourg, France, we decided to go to France. The drive down was pretty, with the rolling, forested hills of western Germany giving way as we crossed the Rhein to the wheat fields of the Alsace-Loraine region in eastern France. We got to Strasbourg around lunchtime, which is now the seat of the European Parliament and the Council of Europe, but has an old town that was the first city centre to be designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Our first order of business was lunch. We decided to go to an actual French Restaurant and we ordered the plate of the day, with an appetizer of escargot. I should have taken a picture, because words don’t really describe the little buggers in their individual cups, covered in a green, slimy paste (garlic pesto sauce). We each went ahead and ate three of them, and of course, they tasted a lot like oysters, but they would have tasted better in horseradish.
