The Stadium

After the Library we walked down to the Stadium, which could seat 30,000 people. You can tell the population of a town by the seating capacity of it's stadium, since the stadium was intended to seat every person in town. Ephesus was a huge metropolis of the day. The only larger stadium was in Aspendos, outside of Antalya.

Our guide said that Cleopatra and Marc Anthony, St. Paul, St. John, Mary the mother of Jesus, (and well Sting too) all walked though this town and down the road to the port (which, if you remember, silted up and no longer leads to the sea).
